Tomorrow's Leaders and the Future of Euro-Atlantic Security
 |
The Forum Tomorrow's Leaders and the Future of Euro-Atlantic Security took place in Rome at the Italian Center for High Defense Studies on September 25th – 27th. On the eve of the Riga Summit, the Forum provided NATO leaders and decision makers with proposals for the future path of the Alliance, drawing upon the vision and rising leadership of young researchers and policy makers across NATO, PfP and Mediterranean Dialogue countries. Moreover, the Forum was aimed to foster a research network and a new cadre of leadership in NATO-related issues among rising experts and professionals in the academic and policy communities. Participants have been selected among policy makers, researchers at centers for strategic/defense studies or from military academies, young parliamentarians or governmental staffers, between 25 and 35 years old. The seventy participants of the Rome Atlantic Forum discussed the future role, capabilities, and mission of NATO, in consideration of future challenges and threats. Forum proceedings included an opening and closing plenary sessions that have been addressed by high NATO officials and important speakers coming from different NATO and PfP countries. However, the Forum program was mainly based on four parallel working-groups to focus on the following issues: - Counter-Terrorism and Critical Infrastructure Protection; - Stabilization and Reconstruction; - Partnerships; - Future of Operations.
Working group proceedings took also benefit from the participation of key experts and tutors.
At the end of the three-day Forum, participants outlined their vision for the future of NATO, and produced four Reports and proposals that have been circulated among the national delegations to NATO and shared with decision makers in their national capitals. A Certificate of Attendance was handed out to all participants at a Closing ceremony. Participants have been welcome at the Capitol by the Deputy Mayor of Rome. A cultural program and a special visit at the Borghese Gallery Museum took place. A specific website (www.comitatoatlantico.it/forum/) is online, permitting participants to post comments and to foster their relationships. The Rome Atlantic Forum is an international initiative for future leaders, decision makers and researchers that should take place on annual basis. The Rome Atlantic Forum was organized by the Italian Atlantic Committee in cooperation with the Atlantic Treaty Association, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Defense, the Italian Center for High Defense Studies, the NATO Public Diplomacy Division, the US Mission to NATO and the US Embassy in Rome.
