Young Atlanticist Summit

Bucharest, April 1-4, 2008

 

Over 120 university students and young professionals from 35 Alliance and Partner countries, including Afghanistan, participated in the Young Atlanticist Summit, held in Bucharest in conjunction with the NATO Summit. Participants met with NATO and national leaders and also discussed issues on the Summit agenda during debates and simulation exercises. An additional 300 students and professors at Kabul University also participated in the event through video teleconferenceMore than 100 students and young professionals coming from over 40 countries

The Italian Delegation was composed by six students and young researchers, coming from the Universities of Rome-LUISS Guido Carli, Trieste-Gorizia, Milan- Catholic University and Bari represented Italy.

The Young Atlanticist Summit was organized by YATA in cooperation with the Atlantic Treaty Association and the Euro-Atlantic Council of Romania, under the leadership of the Atlantic Council of the United States.

Participants had meetings and discussions with NATO Secretary General, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, and the SACEUR John Craddock, as well as with several Heads of States, including the President of Romania, Traian Basescu, the President of Afghanistan, Ahmid Karzai, the President of Estonia Toomas Hendrick Ilves, the President of Georgia, Mikail Shakashvili, the President of the United States, George W. Bush, the Prime Minister of Romania Călin Poescu Tăriceanu, the Prime Minister of Albania Sali Berisha, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Jan Peter Balkenende and the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom, David Miliband.

During the Young Atlanticist Summit, an international simulation was organized. Participants were requested to manage the abrupt rise of an international crisis in the Mediterranean as well as to reach consensus on a joint declaration on the NATO policy on energy security.

Eight Afghan students, winners of the 'Manfred Wörner Award for Afghan Students', participated in the Summit. It was the first time ever, that young Afghans were involved in an international YATA activity paving the way for the development of a structured cooperation between the Afghan youth and YATA.
A joint Declaration was issued during the Young Atlanticist Summit testifying the willingness of the Afghan youth to become part of the YATA.
