In the awakening of the turbulences in the Arab world, the Palermo Atlantic Forum has raised some very important points about security and cooperation issues. With new challenges such as terrorism, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, illegal trafficking (both in drugs and human beings), trans-national organized crime, and environmental problems, countries need to collaborate in order to find effective solutions.

The Palermo Atlantic Forum’s second session focus on human security triggered an interesting, enriching and complex debate about the definition and multiple aspects of human security. he safety and security of vulnerable groups, the fight against gender-based violence in situations of peace as well as that of conflict, the fight against human trafficking, and the empowerment of women and ethnic minorities is at the heart of human security, but also a long-term factor to sustainable peace and stability.

The events which took and are still taking place on the southern shores of the Mediterranean sea are not determining yet a clear future for the countries and populations involved. What does it really take to let this Arab spring be a beginning of a new democratic and pacific era?

  • YNCM

    The Youth Network for Cooperation in the Mediterranean (YNCM) is set to promote dialogue and cooperation between Mediterranean countries and peoples in order to achieve common solutions to the common challenges affecting the region. To this end, the YNCM provides the young generation of Mediterranean leaders with a platform to exchange ideas, expertise and best practices on the way forward to strengthen Mediterranean dialogue and cooperation.

  • ACTIVITY

    The YNCM focuses its initiatives and cooperation programs on issues of mutual concern and interest for the two shores of the Mediterranean, such as security, human rights, economic development, cultural relations. In this framework, the YNCM promotes research projects, scientific publications, international conferences, as well as study trips to the European and Atlantic Institutions.

  • MEMBERSHIP

    The YNCM is aimed at University students, young researchers and professionals from Europe and the Southern Mediterranean countries. It also welcomes the participation of qualified professionals, academics and experts.

    The YNCM was launched by the Italian Atlantic Committee on occasion of the Atlantic Forum organized in Palermo on 10-11 of June 2011. The YNCM operates in partnership with the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA) and under the auspices of the Italian Presidency of the Councils of Ministers - Department of Youth.
