Euroatlantic Security and the Challenges from the South (SPD). Bruxelles, 22 aprile 2026.

The war in Ukraine, together with the evolving geopolitical environment across the Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa (MMEA), is increasingly shaping the strategic landscape of the Euro-Atlantic community. Ongoing regional conflicts, intensifying geopolitical competition, fragile governance environments, irregular migration dynamics, and transnational extremist networks are generating complex and interrelated security challenges with direct implications for Europe and the Atlantic Alliance.
Recent developments in the Middle East — including the escalation of tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, as well as the continuing instability across Gaza, Syria, and the wider regional system — have heightened the risk of spillover effects into Europe. These include the potential activation or radicalisation of extremist networks, increased ideological mobilisation, and emerging terrorist threats, as well as the risk of coercive leverage through the disruption or threatened blockage of critical maritime choke points essential for global navigation and for Europe’s energy supply chains, with consequential impacts on its economic and social stability.

South Policy Dialogues (SPD)

Strengthening strategic awareness, enhancing institutional dialogue, and promoting cooperative security initiatives between Euro-Atlantic institutions and partners in the Southern neighbourhood has become increasingly important. To this the ATA Committee on Mediterranean, Middle East & Africa has launched a series of South Policy Dialogues (SPD) in Europe together with cooperative security initiatives across the MENA region.
